Medical examination
A truck driver is responsible not only for their own safety, but also for the safety of others. Before you can drive a truck, the CBR must first determine whether you are fit to do so. That is why you must first undergo a medical examination. The examination checks whether you have any health problems and whether, for example, you take any medication that could affect your driving.
Why do I need a medical examination?
Because you spend many hours on the road and have a great deal of responsibility, stricter rules apply to driving trucks or buses. You are therefore required to undergo a medical examination before you can even take your practical exam. You must repeat the medical examination every 5 years to ensure road safety.
What do they check during a medical examination?
During a medical examination, your general physical health and mental condition are assessed, as well as whether your arms and legs function properly. The examining doctor checks your blood pressure and urine and assesses your vision in traffic. The examination must be carried out in accordance with CBR requirements.
How can I get a medical examination?
The medical examination is carried out by an occupational health physician. You can go to any occupational health physician you find on Google. Bear in mind that each occupational health physician sets their own rates, so it is a good idea to do some research. If you have the medical examination, you do not need to apply to the CBR for a Health Declaration yourself. The occupational health physician will do this for you.
Please don't forget your health declaration. (Applying online is faster.)
Assessing your health can sometimes take longer than four months. If you expect to need to see one or more medical specialists, we recommend submitting your Health Declaration 5 to 6 months before your driving licence expires. Digital submission is faster, so go to My CBR to submit your Health Declaration.
How do I submit a health declaration digitally?
- Go to cbr.nl and log in using DigiD with SMS or the app. Don't have DigiD with SMS verification or the app yet? Apply for it at www.digid.nl.
- Select ‘Complete Health Declaration’. Start by entering your personal details, followed by questions about your health. Once you have answered all the questions, check your answers. You can also save them for your own records if you wish. Then confirm your answers by signing in with DigiD via SMS or the app, and finally pay using iDeal (€37,80).
- You will immediately receive confirmation by email and via Mijn CBR that your Health Declaration has been submitted.
- You will then receive form(s) for the occupational health physician, any referrals to specialists and ZD code(s) via My CBR as soon as possible (within 7 weeks at the latest). The codes allow the physician to complete your information quickly and digitally and send it to us.
- Make an appointment with an occupational health physician for the examination and, if necessary, with the specialist(s). First, check with the physician whether they work with Zorg Domein. Bring your message(s) with the ZD code(s) and your ID. This allows the physician and specialist(s) to complete and send your documents digitally, which is faster than sending them by post. To be on the safe side, also bring a printout of all the messages.
- The doctor and, if applicable, specialist(s) will examine you and complete the required forms.
- Send all the documents back to the CBR, or ask your doctor to submit them digitally via Zorg Domein. You can always review these documents beforehand. Ask for a copy for your own records.
- A doctor at the CBR will review all your information, and you will receive a message via My CBR . Most customers receive this message within 8 to 15 weeks.
- If necessary, the CBR will refer you for a driving test. In some cases, more information is needed and you will be referred to a specialist.
- Once all the information has been received, the CBR will decide whether you are fit to drive and can renew your driving licence. You will receive notification by email and via Mijn CBR. You can also check the status of your application in Mijn CBR.
If you cannot or do not wish to submit the application online, you can complete the Health Declaration on paper. Please note: processing a paper Health Declaration takes longer.
