What is Code 95?
Code 95 is a European professional competence directive that is noted on your driving licence. This endorsement proves that you are a qualified professional driver and can drive safely and responsibly. Since 2008, Code 95 has been mandatory for everyone who drives a truck (driving licence C/CE) or bus (driving licence D/DE) professionally. The aim of this directive is to improve road safety and ensure professionalism in road transport.
Anyone obtaining a C or D driving licence for professional use must also obtain the Code 95 basic qualification. After that, you must complete refresher training every five years to keep your professional competence valid. Without a valid Code 95, you simply cannot carry out professional transport.
Code 95 Basic Qualification (for new drivers)
Would you like to become a professional driver and don’t yet have a truck or bus driving licence? Then you must first obtain the Code 95 basic qualification. This is a training programme that includes both theory and practical exams. You’ll take the truck theory modules RVM1-C, VM2-C and VM3-C, as well as the following practical tests: VPTC (Practical Test C) and VPBC (Closed-Course Test).
Once you have passed all the components, you will receive your category C or D driving licence with a Code 95 endorsement. The five-year cycle then begins, during which you must complete 35 hours of refresher training every five years to maintain your professional competence. When do you need Code 95?
Anyone who drives a vehicle professionally for which a category C or D driving licence is required needs Code 95. This applies to truck drivers and bus drivers, including those involved in international transport.
Even if you only drive professionally occasionally, the rule still applies: as soon as you get behind the wheel of a truck or bus for work, the endorsement must be on your driving licence. If you only drive a truck privately or as a hobby, Code 95 is not mandatory.
Exemption from obtaining Code 95
Not every truck or bus driver is required to have Code 95. There are exceptions, for example for vehicles used for own-account transport, agricultural vehicles, emergency services, or vehicles with a maximum speed of 45 km/h. How long is Code 95 valid?
An obtained Code 95 is valid for five years. To maintain its validity, you must complete 35 hours of continuing training within those five years, including at least 7 hours of practical training. Once you have completed those hours, you can have Code 95 added to your driving licence again, and a new five-year period begins. This keeps your professional competence up to date and ensures you meet the legal requirements.
Code 95 expired?
Has your Code 95 expired? You’re not allowed to carry out professional transport until you’ve completed the mandatory refresher training and the endorsement is back on your driving licence. Driving without a valid Code 95 is prohibited unless you qualify for an official exemption.

Code 95 refresher training
Every professional driver is required to complete 35 hours of refresher training every five years. At least 7 of those hours must consist of practical training. You can complete the remaining hours through classroom courses or e-learning. Please note: you can complete a maximum of 12 hours of e-learning within the 35 hours. Only refresher courses certified by the CBR count towards the mandatory refresher training. This keeps your knowledge up to date, improves your driving and helps you stay safe and responsible on the road.

VCA Code 95
Many drivers combine their Code 95 refresher training with earning a VCA diploma. This abbreviation stands for Vafety, Health and Environment (SHE) Checklist for Acontractors. A VCA diploma shows that you work safely, which is often required at construction sites and industrial locations.

How much does it cost to get Code 95?

Who is required to have Code 95?
Code 95 is required for all professional drivers from the European Union and professional drivers working within the European Union. This applies to drivers with a C1(E), category C(E) licence, D1(E) or D(E) licence. Code 95 is valid for 5 years and must then be renewed through refresher training. The Code 95 refresher training requirement applies equally to drivers transporting their own goods and professional hauliers, as well as to employers and employees.
How often do I need to take continuing education?
Every five years, you must complete 35 hours of periodic training, including 7 hours of practical training.
Is there a subsidy available for obtaining Code 95?
Yes, in many cases you can receive a subsidy for obtaining or renewing Code 95 through industry funds such as SOOB (transport and logistics) or FSO (bus/coach). Employers who contribute to these funds may be reimbursed for some or all of the training costs. The subsidy must be applied for in advance and is only available for approved courses.
How do I get it added to my driving licence?
After completing the required Code 95 refresher traininghours, you can apply for a new driving licence at your local council. The endorsement will then be added to your driving licence.
