You can start studying the theory for your truck driving licence from the age of 17. You can take the practical test from the age of 18. It sounds simple and clear, but there are a few additional rules about taking the test and being allowed to use your truck driving licence. Let's take a closer look!
When can you get a truck driving licence?
You can get your truck driving license from the age of 18, provided you combine it with professional competence training. Otherwise, you’ll have to wait until you’re 21. Here’s a clear overview.
- From age 17: Study truck theory and take driving lessons.
- From the age of 18: You can take the exams for C1, C1E, CE and C driving licences. The last two must be combined with Code 95.
- From the age of 21: You can also get a CE or C license without Code 95.

If you want to drive a truck professionally, obtaining your truck driving licence must always be combined with code 95. This is a basic qualification that demonstrates the driver's professional competence.

Medical examination required every 5 years
If you want to renew your truck driving licence, you must prove every 5 years that you are still medically fit to drive a truck. The CBR carries out this assessment based on a health declaration. As the assessment can take quite some time, the CBR recommends applying at least 5 months before your driving licence expires, especially if you expect to need further examinations.
