There have been staff shortages in the transport sector for years. So the chances of finding a good job are quite high. It’s no wonder that many people make a career change and start working as drivers, especially when they’re a little older. But can you actually become a truck driver later in life? And how does it work?

Can I become a truck driver later in life?

Yes, you can definitely become a truck driver later in life! In fact, it’s a popular career change for people who already have more life experience. It’s relatively easy to get started. Of course, you’ll need to take some exams, but at least you won’t have to complete an expensive, lengthy training course!

Benefits

Becoming a truck driver later in life brings many benefits. For yourself and any potential employer.

  • Flexibility
When you’re a little older, you’re often more flexible. For example, your children may be older or have even left home. For many people, that makes it easier to spend longer periods away from home.
  • Independence
As a truck driver, you often have a lot of freedom. That also means you need to be able to work independently. When you’re a little older, you’re often better able to handle that responsibility. For example, you’re more self-disciplined, better able to deal with any loneliness, and often able to concentrate for longer!
  • Experience
Perhaps most importantly, you have more experience. On the road, too. As a result, older drivers are often more patient. They can handle different situations better and are less likely to feel stressed. That makes the work enjoyable.

Disadvantages

Of course, there’s another side to the coin. In other words, there can also be some challenges if you’re planning to become a truck driver later in life:

  • Physical complaints
This doesn’t apply to everyone, but as an older driver, you may be more prone to physical complaints, for example in your neck, back or shoulders. That’s understandable—you’re not 18 anymore…
  • Lifestyle changes
If you’re not coming from the transport sector, switching careers to become a truck driver may require some adjustments to your life. Instead of a 9-to-5 office job, you’ll now have to deal with irregular working hours and may spend less time at home with your family.

How can you become a truck driver later in life?

Would you like to become a professional truck driver later in life? You’ll need a Category C driving licence with Code 95. A Category C licence alone is not enough. To obtain a Category C truck licence with Code 95, you must have a Category B driving licence and pass a number of theory exams:

You must also demonstrate your professional competence in practice by passing a number of tests with a certified training provider and, of course, taking a practical exam:

  • Professional Competence C Practical Test (VPTC)
  • Professional Competence C Closed-Circuit Test (VPBC) or C Simulator Test
  • Category C Truck Practical Exam

Tip: Many employers offer training or retraining programmes that allow you to obtain all of the above, sometimes even with a job guarantee. Paying for your studies yourself? Check whether you can apply for a subsidy from your municipality or the UWV!

Starting your own business?

Would you like to start your own transport company or become a self-employed truck driver later in life? Then you also need to obtain a NIWO permit. It is a kind of qualification for professional goods transport that proves, among other things, that you are reliable, creditworthy and professionally competent!

Truck Theory & NIWO Certification

Would you also like to become a truck driver later in life? We’d be happy to help you pass your truck theory test. With a course and exam on the same day, you’ll almost always pass on your first try. You can also take a course for a NIWO certificate in the same way!
