A truck’s blind spot poses many risks for truck drivers and is rightly described as one of the greatest dangers on the road. Every year, dozens of fatal accidents occur involving blind spots. That is why it is especially important for you as a truck driver to know exactly what a blind spot is. We explain this in this blog post.

What is a truck's blind spot?

The blind spot refers to the areas around a truck that the driver cannot see, even with the help of mirrors. These blind spots are mainly located along the sides, directly in front of the cab and at the rear of the vehicle. Cyclists, pedestrians and vehicles in these areas are often invisible to the driver, which can pose serious risks.

Why is the blind spot so dangerous?

Trucks are large, heavy vehicles with limited manoeuvrability. When another road user is in a truck’s blind spot, the driver cannot see them or their vehicle. This can easily lead to accidents when changing lanes, turning or reversing. Accidents involving trucks often have serious consequences, given the vehicle’s weight and speed.

How can you prevent accidents?

As a truck driver, it is important to always be aware of the blind spots around your vehicle and to take extra precautions. Make sure all your mirrors are adjusted correctly and check them regularly while driving.

Use blind-spot mirrors, cameras and sensors to help you maintain a complete overview of your surroundings. This allows you to keep a closer eye on your surroundings at all times. Communicate with other road users too. Use your indicators well in advance and make eye contact with cyclists and pedestrians to ensure they understand your manoeuvres and that you understand theirs.

Awareness for all road users

It is not only the truck driver’s responsibility to prevent accidents. All road users should be aware of the dangers of a truck’s blind spots and keep an appropriate distance from trucks. Cyclists and pedestrians in particular should be extra alert around large vehicles and make sure they are visible to the driver.

To stay safe around a truck's blind spots, it is advisable to avoid areas directly in front of a truck or alongside it. It is better to stay well behind trucks. After all, the driver sits very high in the cab and cannot always see you. In addition, cyclists and pedestrians are advised to always stay behind trucks on the right-hand side. Keep at least 3 metres away from trucks and you will be much safer on the road.
