Check the vehicle registration certificate

This is specified by the vehicle manufacturer and depends on factors such as the maximum permitted load on the driven axle(s), the engine power and the braking system of the towing vehicle.

Is the vehicle’s stated maximum mass less than 40 or 50 tonnes? Then, of course, you cannot transport any more weight.

Apply for an exemption for truck weight

For certain (technical) reasons, some vehicles may not meet the maximum permitted mass. Examples include vehicles that are oversized or mobile machinery. You must apply to the RDW for approval. Exemptions always come with certain conditions, such as avoiding certain roads. After all, some routes are less suitable for such heavy vehicles in terms of load-bearing capacity and wear. The RDW will provide you with the current conditions for your exemption.

LZV exemption up to 60 tonnes

The Long and Heavy Vehicle Combination (LHV) is a good example of a vehicle for which an exemption can be requested. As the name suggests, these vehicles may be longer and heavier, up to a total weight of 60 kilos. However, not everyone is allowed to drive an LHV. You need a special LHV certificate, which you can obtain after holding a CE truck driving licence for at least 5 years.
