Why do I need a medical examination for a heavy vehicle driving licence?

As a driver, it’s important to ensure your own safety and that of others at all times. When driving large vehicles, you have more responsibility than when driving smaller vehicles. That’s why it’s important to check every five years whether it’s still safe for you to drive a truck or bus. That’s the purpose of the medical examination for a heavy vehicle driving licence. We’re also happy to help you practise truck theory and refresh your knowledge.

How long does a medical examination for a heavy vehicle driving licence take?

The examination itself usually does not take very long. The examining doctor will carry out a few tests, but this generally takes no longer than two hours. Once the CBR has received the doctor's report, it will let you know within four weeks whether it is (still) responsible to let you drive. Before you can visit the CBR doctor, you must first complete a health declaration via mijn.cbr.nl. Once you have submitted the health declaration, you will receive a confirmation with the CBR doctor's details.

What is tested during a medical examination?

Medical examinations can cover physical condition as well as mental health. Most examinations consist of a questionnaire, a physical examination and a discussion about your general health. During a medical examination for a heavy vehicle licence, particular attention is also paid to whether your arms and legs are functioning properly. The CBR medical adviser decides whether you are fit to drive a bus or truck. Has the medical adviser approved you? You will then receive a certificate of fitness.
