LZV truck combination stands for Longer and Heavier Vehicle Combination. As the name may suggest, it refers to a truck combination that is longer and heavier than ‘standard’. Let’s take a look at more information about the LZV truck combination and how you can get your LZV driving licence!

What is an LZV?

LZV stands for Longer and Heavier Vehicle Combination or Truck Combination. This type of truck is also known as an Ecocombi. The truck model has a maximum length of 25.25 metres and a maximum weight of 60 tonnes.

Advantages of an LZV truck combination

An LHV vehicle can carry up to twice as much as ordinary trucks using the same amount of fuel, making a significant contribution to reducing CO2 emissions. This is therefore one of the biggest advantages of an LHV truck combination.

In addition, fewer drivers are needed to transport more goods. This means more can be transported at the same time, thereby saving time and money.

  • Save time, money and CO2 emissions!

Disadvantages of LHV truck combinations

Although LZV truck combinations are very efficient, it's important to realise that they are a little more difficult to drive. So you can't just drive one without meeting the requirements! Drivers must have the right qualifications, which means there are fewer LZV drivers. Taking the exam costs money, and purchasing an LZV vehicle is relatively expensive.

In the Netherlands, LZVs may use all motorways and major routes, but that doesn’t mean they are easy to drive. They are less manoeuvrable, which makes them more difficult to use, especially in urban areas. In other countries, different rules may also apply to road use.

  • High purchase costs, fewer LZV drivers and various LZV rules!

Do I need to get an LZV truck driving licence?

To drive an LZV truck combination, drivers must take an additional exam. So you do not need to get a specific LZV driving licence, but you do need to pass the test to obtain the mandatory LZV certificate.

Of course, a category C driving licence is required as a basic qualification to obtain the LZV certificate. Do you want to drive professionally? Then you also need to have code 95.

If you don't yet have the right basic qualifications, you can quickly obtain your truck driving licence at NuVrachtwagen. It's important to know that you must have held a category CE driving licence for at least 5 years. Your category CE licence must not have been declared invalid in the preceding 3 years, and you must not have been disqualified from driving.

Get your LZV certificate: the exam

You must take the Certificate for Long and Heavy Vehicles (LHV) exam through the CBR. You will be tested both theoretically (orally) and in practice on the following:

  • Route selection and trip preparation
  • Traffic awareness
  • Performing special manoeuvres
  • Professional attitude

You bring your own truck combination to the exam. It must weigh at least 35 tonnes and be loaded to 50% of its maximum payload. The exam takes about 2.5 hours, after which you’ll know straight away whether you’ve passed!
