What is Convoi exceptionnel?
A Convoi exceptionnel is a special transport operation that is heavier, wider, taller or longer than is legally permitted on public roads. Examples include transporting wind turbines, large machinery or prefabricated concrete structures. Because such loads exceed the standard dimensions and weight limits, additional rules apply and a special permit is required. These rules help ensure road safety and keep traffic flowing smoothly.
When is a transport considered Convoi exceptionnel?
A transport is considered Convoi exceptionnel when the vehicle, including its load, exceeds certain legal limits. In the Netherlands, this usually means a width of more than 2.75 metres, a length of more than 16.50 metres or a weight above 50 tonnes. The exact limits vary by country. Once these limits are exceeded, the transport is considered exceptional, and the carrier must apply for a permit from the road authority in advance.
Convoi exceptionnel sign
Vehicles classified as Convoi exceptionnel must have a clearly identifiable sign on the front and rear. The sign is yellow with black text and clearly displays the words “Convoi exceptionnel”. This warns other road users that the transport is exceptional and that extra caution is required. The sign must be clearly visible and must not be obscured by the load or any parts of the vehicle. In many cases, the sign is used together with flashing lights and escort vehicles.
Escort and traffic measures
For larger transports, an escort is mandatory. This may involve escort vehicles or a police escort, depending on the route and dimensions. Traffic measures may also be necessary, such as temporary road closures or the removal of obstacles. Everything is coordinated to ensure the safety of other road users and prevent damage to infrastructure.
