What is Euro 6?
Euro 6 is the current European emissions standard for vehicles. This standard determines how many harmful substances a vehicle is allowed to emit. Euro 6 applies to both passenger cars and trucks and is intended to reduce air pollution. The standard sets particularly strict limits on nitrogen oxides (NOx), particulate matter (PM) and soot particles. As a result, trucks with a Euro 6 engine emit significantly fewer harmful substances than older models with, for example, a Euro 4 or Euro 5 standard.
What does Euro 6 mean for trucks?
Trucks that meet the Euro 6 standard are equipped with modern technologies, such as an SCR system (Selective Catalytic Reduction) and a particulate filter. The SCR system uses AdBlue to convert nitrogen oxides into nitrogen and water vapour before they are emitted. This reduces NOx emissions by up to 90% compared with older diesel engines. For transport companies, this means cleaner driving, less impact on the environment and often lower toll and environmental zone charges in Europe.
Since when has Euro 6 been in force?
The Euro 6 standard was introduced for new vehicle types at the end of 2013 and has been mandatory for all new vehicles since 2014. Since then, Euro 6 has been the standard for the sale of new diesel trucks. Some cities and countries now have stricter access requirements, allowing only vehicles with a Euro 6 label in environmental zones. It is therefore important for transport companies to invest in vehicles that meet this standard.
Euro 6 and AdBlue
Almost every Euro 6 truck uses AdBlue, a urea solution injected into the exhaust system. Without enough AdBlue, the SCR system does not work properly. As a result, the truck may develop a fault or be unable to run at full power. Regularly topping up the AdBlue is therefore important to ensure the truck continues to comply with the Euro 6 standard and functions properly.
