What is the ERRU register?
The ERRU register is a European registration system that records violations by transport companies and professional drivers. ERRU stands for European Register of Road Transport Undertakings. The system is designed to monitor the reliability of transport companies in the EU. Member States automatically share information about serious violations through this register, so that misconduct can be addressed across borders.
How does the ERRU register work?
As soon as a professional driver or transport company commits an infringement—such as tachograph fraud, overloading, or driving without a permit—it is recorded in the ERRU register. Each infringement is assigned a weighting factor and counts towards the reliability assessment of the company or transport manager. Infringements are automatically reported to the authority in the country where the company is registered, such as the ILT (Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate) in the Netherlands.
What are the consequences of ERRU registrations?
If a transport company or transport manager has too many serious violations on record, this can lead to an official warning, a professional driving ban or even the revocation of the NIWO license. For drivers, this could mean they are no longer allowed to work in professional freight transport. The system compels companies to closely monitor compliance with the rules, as their conduct directly affects their license and reputation.
Who has access to the ERRU register?
The ERRU register is not public. Only authorised authorities have access to the data. Companies are notified when a violation is recorded and, in some cases, have the right to appeal. The register is linked to other European databases, such as those of the CBR, ILT and foreign inspection services.
