Every so often, you see a truck with a flashing beacon go by. But what exactly are the rules for using a flashing beacon? When may you use one, and when must you use a flashing beacon on a truck? And are there any other things to keep in mind? That's what we'll be discussing!

Why use a flashing beacon on a truck?

A warning beacon on a truck is used to alert other road users. It draws extra attention, letting other road users know, for example, that they should keep their distance or take care.

When should you use a warning beacon on a truck?

You cannot just use a warning beacon on a truck—or on any other vehicle. Below, we explain the situations in which it is permitted.

  • Abnormal loads (Convoi Exceptionnel): Trucks carrying oversized loads or loads that exceed standard dimensions. In other words, non-standard loads.
  • Trucks carrying out work on or alongside the road: This includes carrying out maintenance or construction work.
  • Truck providing emergency assistance: For example, a fire truck that needs to get somewhere urgently to put out a fire.
  • For convoys and escorted transport: when special convoys are scheduled or an escort is needed because of the cargo or the route.

When am I considered to be carrying an exceptional load?

The familiar ‘Convoi Exceptionnel’ sign indicates that the truck is carrying a special or abnormal load. This is one of the main reasons drivers wonder whether or not they need a flashing beacon. So, when does a load count as abnormal?

This refers to extra-long, wide and/or heavy transport. The designation is given when the vehicle does not meet the established standard requirements (maximum 50,000 kilos). You also need to apply for a permit from the RDW, and must avoid certain roads because they are too narrow, tight or low (underpasses).

Sometimes these trucks are accompanied by other transport as a precaution, but the flashing beacon alone is also effective. The truck must be equipped with a flashing beacon and warning panels. This allows a heavy and long truck to travel more safely on the road by warning other road users.

What color should a truck's warning beacon be?

The flashing beacon on the truck must of course not be a blue police beacon. It is a specific yellow-orange beacon (most people would call it orange). When we refer to a flashing beacon on a truck, we are generally referring to the yellow-orange flashing lights at the rear of the truck. These must be R65 certified, which means they can be seen from all angles.

Can I install a warning beacon on a truck?

Many people also wonder whether it is permitted to install a warning beacon, or flashing light, on a truck. For example, you could switch it on in extremely foggy conditions or when approaching a traffic jam.

It is important to know that you must always comply with the Vehicle Regulations for trucks. If you are not transporting exceptional loads or in one of the other specified situations, you are not allowed to use an orange warning beacon on your truck. Of course, you can still switch on the regular hazard lights.
