In the transport industry, there are various types of semi-trailers and trailers, each with its own purpose. A low-loader is a special type of semi-trailer used to transport extremely heavy, tall or wide loads. But what makes a low-loader unique, and when is it used? We explain it in this blog.
What is a low-loader?
A low-loader is a semi-trailer whose loading bed is positioned lower than that of a standard trailer. This allows transport companies to carry loads that exceed the maximum dimensions of a truck on the road. The low loading bed allows trucks with a low-loader to pass under bridges and flyovers without the load being too high.
Low-loaders are mainly used to transport heavy and large machinery, such as construction cranes, excavators, agricultural vehicles and industrial equipment. Depending on the type of low-loader and the number of axles, they can often carry up to 100 tonnes or more.
What types of low-loaders are there?
There are several types of low-loader, each designed for specific loads:
- Standard low-loader: has a low loading platform and is used to transport tall vehicles or machinery.
- Extendable low loader: can be extended to carry extra-long loads, such as wind turbine blades or steel structures.
- Hydraulic low-loader: fitted with a hydraulic lifting system that allows the height and angle of the semi-trailer to be adjusted.
- Semi low-loader: has a slightly higher loading floor than a true low-loader, making it suitable for less extreme heights. Its higher loading floor makes it somewhat more flexible to use.
When is a low-loader used?
Low-loaders are used when a standard semi-trailer or truck is not suitable for the transport. This applies to:
- Construction machinery and industrial vehicles: such as excavators, bulldozers and cranes that are too tall or too heavy for an ordinary trailer.
- Agricultural vehicles: tractors and harvesting machines often do not fit on standard trucks.
- Wind turbine components and steel structures: long and heavy objects are often transported using an extendable low-loader.
- Military vehicles: tanks and other heavy military vehicles are usually transported on a low-loader.
What licence do you need to drive a low-loader?
To drive a low-loader, you need a Category C licence. This licence is required to drive trucks with an authorised maximum mass of more than 3,500 kg. Since a low-loader is usually used as a semi-trailer, you will often also need a Category CE licence. If you drive a low-loader professionally, you will also need Code 95, which demonstrates that you are professionally qualified as a truck driver.
If you carry out exceptional transport using a low-loader, additional certificates may be required. For example, an ADR certificate if you transport hazardous substances, or a special transport permit if your load exceeds the standard transport limits for height, width or weight.
How does loading and unloading a low-loader work?
Because a low-loader is so low, many vehicles can drive onto it themselves via loading ramps. If that is not possible, a crane is used to hoist the load onto the trailer. When transporting extremely heavy loads, proper weight distribution is crucial to keep the truck stable and prevent the load from shifting.
A special transport permit often also needs to be obtained, because a loaded low-loader is often wider, longer or heavier than permitted under standard transport regulations.
No heavy transport without low-loaders
A low-loader is an important type of semi-trailer in the transport sector, especially for carrying tall, wide and heavy machinery. Thanks to its low loading platform, a truck with a low-loader can carry oversized loads safely and efficiently.
